Long ago, a mischievous boy used to take the villager's sheep to graze in the meadows.
This boy watched the sheep for a long time. But soon got tired of watching them. He decided to have some fun. He pretended a wolf was chasing the sheep. "Wolf! Wolf!" he cried as loud as he could.
Farmers working in the nearby fields heard the boy's cries. They came running with their sticks to chase the wolf away.
"There is no wolf," giggled the boy. "I called out for fun. It was good fun to see you all running up for nothing."
The men were angry, but said nothing and went back.
The very next day the boy took the sheep again.
This time a real wolf came from the woods. The boy was alarmed and shouted, "Wolf! Wolf!" as loud as he could.
The farmers in the nearby fields heard him shouting again. But they said, "Oh! It is only that boy calling for fun. He will not fool us this time."
So no one came to help the boy to drive away the wolf. And the wolf conveniently went off with one of the sheep.
The boy went home weeping. When the villagers realised the truth. And he got a good spanking for losing a sheep because of his mischief! After receiving the proper punishment, the boy said, "I will never again lie in my life!"
Moral - People do not believe in liars, even when they tell the truth.
