The Hare and the Tortoise |
The hare, which always quick with its hops, often laughed at the slow tortoise.
"You slow old thing!" said the hare, "Why do you not hurry up?"
"I may be slow," said the tortoise, "But I could beat you in a race."
"What??? You could beat me!?!" The hare found this funny.
"Yes," said the proud tortoise, "I could beat you!"
"It is silly for a hare to race with a tortoise."
"You are afraid you will lose," said the tortoise.
"Very well," said the hare, "A race it is, then!"
A mouse decided a long, circular route around the forest and posted other animals along the track to make sure they both ran the entire distance.
The mouse flagged them off. "One, two, three - go!"
Off went the hare, and the tortoise followed him.
After a while, the confident hare lay down to rest and he soon went to sleep. The tortoise passed by the hare on his way. He was very slow but he kept on and on. The hare was still asleep.
The hare remembered the race with the tortoise, and said to himself "I must run now, or tortoise will win."
When the hare reached the finish line, the tortoise was already being congratulated by all the animals in the forest.
The mouse said to the hare, "He reached the winning post while you wee asleep."
So the tortoise beat the hare after all.
Moral - Slow and steady wins the race.
