 Hussain Sagar (lit. 'Lake') was built on a tributary of the Musi river during the reign of Ibrahim Qutb Shah in 1562. The construction and the supervision of the lake was entrusted to Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali, the revered Sufi saint and the son-in-law of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah.
 On either side of the bund, Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah built two sarais (rest-houses). The level of water in the tank are regulated with the help of four sluice gates on the Secunderabad side of the bund.
A bund on the lake links the twin cities of Hyderabad  and Secunderabad. Hussain Sagar Bund is one and a half-mile long and covers an area of about eight square miles. This bund acts as a promenade that is popularly known as Tank Bund. If you are here in the evening after an exhausting tour around Hyderabad you may want to avoid walking and may simply want to relax in Lumbini park and opt for a boat ride around the Buddha statue instead.
This  lake, a venue for many water sports, is a favourite spot among the residents for their daily long and brisk walks. The road overlooking the lake is flanked with black marble statues of noted historic personalities who contributed to the wealth of literature and culture of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The honour to these historic figures is the brainchild of the erstwhile Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, who himself was a great connoisseur of art, literature, history and culture.
The Department of Tourism has planned to introduce screening of Laser shows and short thematic Films, on an Aqua-Screen on the Lake. These screenings are scheduled to mark the beginning of 2001. The screenings are to be executed by a private organisation. A circular 150 feet high Aqua Screen would be generated with the help of spinning water with the help of a motor placed deep under water. The diameter of the circular screen would be around 75 feet.
The sponsored short screenings would be totally free to the public.
