Saint Kabir Das

The name of saint Kabir Das is closely associated with the history of Bhadrachalam. It was Kabir Das who initiated Kancharla Gopanna in to the devotion of Rama by teaching him the Taraka Mantra. After Rama Dasu was released from jail, Saint Kabir came to visit the Rama temple at Bhadrachalam. But the temple priests denied him an entry.

Dejected, Kabir went to the banks of Godavari and prayed to Lord Rama. Angered by the insult meted out to his great devotee Kabir, Rama vanished from the temple. The temple priests found that the idols of the Lord were missing in the temple. They informed Rama Dasu the whole story. Rama Dasu then rushed to the banks of Godavari and fell on the feet of Saint Kabir and asked for his forgiveness. Kabir informed them to go back to the temple. When they returned, they found the idols of Rama and Sita again as before.

Then Rama Dasu asked Kabir as to why he suffered imprisonment and whiplashes. Kabir enlightened him that in his earlier life, Rama Dasu kept a parrot in cage and for that sin he suffered the jail term. More over in this life Rama Dasu once wished that Rama should actually come to his house to eat the offerings he made. Then the Lord came in the guise of a animal to his house and started eating the food. Not knowing that it was indeed Rama, Rama Dasu canned it for eating the food meant for Rama. Kabir Das revealed that it was for this sin that Rama Dasu had to suffer the whip lashes while in the jail.

Kabir spent some time in Bhadrachalam and went away. A temple of saint Kabir was built at Bhadrachalam and all the devotees visiting the Rama temple also visit the temple of saint Kabir.
