Fables
"A fable is an ingenious method of conveying advice and instruction, without
seeming to do so, by diverting little narrative, which, attracting attention,
irresistibly chains it till the moral is imperceptibly rooted in the mind,
there to influence, for the better it may be, all future actions of importance."
—From 'Bewick's Selected Fables of Aesop and others' Thomas Bewick, (1753, 1828).
Even though the fables we publish in this site are over 2400 years old, the
essence of morals that are told here are valid throughout anyone's lifetime,
as they deal with morality—and are applicable to people of all ages!
The famous Panchatantra fables, known to have originiated around this period,
also gained immense popularity. Fables have proven to be successful in focusing
young minds on wise living while awakening intelligence at an early age.
These fables are immensely popular all over the world. The fables are told
by parents to children at an impressionable age; so much so that fables are
also included in educational curricula across the globe.
Tales
Another series of tales that are told repeatedly across generations are the
Jataka tales—tales that recount over five hundred episodes that supposedly occurred
during previous incarnations of Buddha.
Stories
We also retell the stories of the ever green heroes Akbar and Birbal. Stories
of Birbal's unparalleled wit are a constant source of intellectual awakening
for one and all. Though only just over five hundred years old, the stories of
Akbar and Birbal are extremely popular in India and Indian families around the
world.
Over the ages, these fables, tales and stories were published in form of small
booklets and later on as collections. The radio and television too, in their
hours of glory, had drawn inspiration from these sources for their schedules!
And now, it is the turn of the internet; and we do not want to be left behind
in perpetuating the wit, wisdom and intelligence contained in these fables,
tales and stories over the internet—in www.HamaraShehar.com.
Enjoy these fables, tales and stories with your entire family, as have millions
before you!
