Mohabattein (Hindi)

A Family Movie

Cast:

Amitab Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, Jimmy Shergill, Shamita Shetty, Kim Sharma, Preeti Jhangiani.

Director:

Aditya Chopra.

Yash Chopra’s films take fancy for exotic locations. In their films everything is picturised with a rosy touch.

The movie is all about Gurukul and its students. This university is set amidst the sprawling green of the English countryside, with an Indian touch. The principal and sole stern in charge is Narayan Shankar (Amitab Bachchan), who believes in 'Gurukul' ethics. When there is a boy’s college, obviously there should be a girl’s college next door. So that’s what happens here in this film. One can have feast to their eyes. The girls who flounce around with bare minimum clothing. Thank god it is shot in a foreign location. If Indian police happen to see this while in production they would have be jailed for exposure.

We have three students Vicky (Uday Chopra), Sameer (Jugal Hansraj) & Karan (Jimmy Shergill) falling in love more or less at the same time. And then comes the music teacher Raj (Sharukh Khan). Raj gets a contract job as music teacher, for some valid reasons he goes about breaking the rules set by the supreme of the institution. Narayan Shankar is a strict disciplinarian and nobody has changed his rules for the part 25 years. However when Raj starts the changes, he accepts them, always stating that he is anti-change personality.

The flash back is that Raj was once a student of the same Gurukul and falls in love with non other than Shankar Narayan’s only daughter (Aishwarya Rai). Shankar Narayan sends Raj away without seeing his face and his daughter dies.

Rajs idea of change is playing Holi in the nearby Basti and bringing girls into Gurukul for a dance party, which never happened before. He encourages the students to meet their girlfriends.

The film portrays love is more powerful than any rules set, but one should respect the rules and not encourage students to go around with girls. This movie is a conflict between the old and new generation. The end is a truce between them.

There are few real good scenes between Amitab and Sharukh. The movie is for youngsters, but Amitab has done justice to his role with immense dignity.
