Reds stage dharna for stretching Assembly sessions

Hyderabad, September 14 (HSN): A conglomerate of nine Communist parties staged dharna near Sundaraiah Park demanding for extension of the duration of the Assembly monsoon sessions.

CPI state general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy addressing the gathering lamented that the state was passing through a roughest patch of time. These conditions were never before, as intense as now, he added. The state government washed off its hands by declaring 22 districts to be drought hit. It was a sorry state of affairs that it could not handle any relief operation in any district, Sudhakar Reddy lambasted.

The demand for releasing Rs 1,000 crore for drought relief operations by the Left parties was not bothered by the state government, it miserably failed to pressurise the central government for the required assistance, he regretted. He demanded the government to implement food for work scheme in the entire drought hit districts, release of fresh loans to ryots waiving the earlier loans keeping in view the severity of drought.

CPI (M) state general secretary B V Raghavulu held state government to be responsible for the severity of drought in the region. He said half of the drought was natural and the government as a result of its inefficiency in countering created the rest.

The state Assembly sessions should be extended to the time sufficient for discussing and drawing out a concrete plan for eradicating the drought, on the contrary the Reds would resort to intensifying the agitation, he warned.

Sambasiva Rao, Diwakar, B N Reddy, Omkar, Sridhar, Murthy and other left parties leaders were among the speakers.
